Positive False Discovery Proportions: Intrinsic Bounds and Adaptive Control

چکیده
A useful paradigm for multiple testing is to control error rates derived from the false discovery proportion (FDP). The false discovery rate (FDR) is the expectation of the FDP, which is defined to be zero if no rejection is made. However, since follow-up studies are based on hypotheses that are actually rejected, it is important to control the positive FDR (pFDR) or the positive false discovery excessive probability (pFDEP), i.e., the conditional expectation of the FDP or the conditional probability of the FDP exceeding a specified level, given that at least one rejection is made. We show that, unlike FDR, these two positive error rates may not be controllable at a desired level. Given a multiple testing problem, there can exist positive intrinsic lower bounds, such that no procedures can attain a pFDR or pFDEP level below the corresponding bound. To reduce misinterpretations of testing results, we propose several procedures that are adaptive, i.e., they achieve pFDR or pFDEP control when the target control level is attainable, and make no rejections otherwise. The adaptive control is established under a sparsity condition where the fraction of false nulls is increasingly close to zero as well as under the condition where the fraction of false nulls is a positive constant. We demonstrate that the power of the proposed procedures is comparable to the Benjamini-Hochberg FDR controlling procedure.

Background and Objectives: In recent years, new technologies have led to produce a large amount of data and in the field of biology, microarray technology has also dramatically developed. Meanwhile, the Fisher test is used to compare the control group with two or more experimental groups and also to detect the differentially expressed genes. In this study, the false discovery rate was investiga...
متن کاملAn Adaptive Step - down Procedure with Proven Fdr Control under Independence
In this work we study an adaptive step-down procedure for testing m hypotheses. It stems from the repeated use of the false discovery rate controlling the linear step-up procedure (sometimes called BH), and makes use of the critical constants iq/[(m + 1− i(1− q)], i= 1, . . . ,m. Motivated by its success as a model selection procedure, as well as by its asymptotic optimality, we are interested ...
متن کاملAdaptive FDR control under independence and dependence
In the context of multiple hypotheses testing, the proportion π0 of true null hypotheses among the hypotheses to test is a quantity that often plays a crucial role, although it is generally unknown. In order to obtain more powerful procedures, recent research has focused on finding ways to estimate this proportion and incorporate it in a meaningful way in multiple testing procedures, leading to...
متن کاملOn False Discovery Control under Dependence
A popular framework for false discovery control is the random effects model in which the null hypotheses are assumed to be independent. This paper generalizes the random effects model to a conditional dependence model which allows dependence between null hypotheses. The dependence can be useful to characterize the spatial structure of the null hypotheses. Asymptotic properties of false discover...

The camera stabilizer stabilizes the camera’s line of sight by isolating the camera from the model uncertainties, disturbances of operating environment and system movements. This paper presents a voltage-base optimal adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control for camera stabilizer. In this proposed control method, a voltage-base sliding mode controller is applied. But unfortunately, undesirable ...
